DR Plan Overview Print E-mail

A Generic DR Planning Methodology

Though it may be initially conceived as a project, Disaster Recovery Planning is actually a process. It is best thought of as a capability that is developed by an organization to respond rationally to the great irrationality of a disaster.

As shown in the illustration below, the initial DRP project consists of a set of discrete tasks, beginning with project initiation and ending in a change management task that provides a feedback loop for the continuous improvement of the capability itself.

A Model of the DR Plan Process

While planning often commences after systems have been built and networks have been constructed, the core elements of DRP - disaster prevention and data protection - need to become a part of application design and hosting platform development. We can no longer afford to think about DR as a bolt-on to existing infrastructure. Going forward, we need to integrate recovery planning into the full range of business and information technology decision-making.

Registered members will have the opportunity to take a deep dive into the new approaches and techniques that are reshaping the Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Planning landscape. We'll look at each phase of the DR Planning project and also offer some guidance about specific technical and procedural options that planners may wish to consider in order to make their plans both more business-savvy and more efficacious.
